California Student Dies From Apparent Alcohol Poisoning After Party at Unrecognized Fraternity

A freshman at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) died from apparent alcohol poisoning earlier this month after attending a party at a fraternity chapter that is not officially recognized by the university or its national organization.

Anthony Joseph Blas, 18, was taken to an emergency room unresponsive around 12:07 a.m. on September 13 and later pronounced dead. Police investigating the incident determined that Blas had attended a function at an unaffiliated fraternity the night he died. While the official cause and manner of death are pending determination by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, alcohol consumption is believed to be a contributing factor, according to the Fullerton Police Department.

Authorities have not officially named the fraternity, but the location of the function is near the Delta Chi fraternity house. The Orange County Register reported that the Delta Chi chapter at CSUF has not been recognized by its national office. The university also ceased recognizing the chapter in 2021, citing nine violations that included hazing allegations, as well as the use, possession, or distribution of illegal drugs and alcohol.

Delta Chi's national office stated that it has worked with university officials to inform students that no active chapter exists at CSUF. The organization expressed support for a thorough review of the circumstances and emphasized that Anthony's family deserves answers.

While police initially stated that hazing was not considered a factor and there was no evidence of foul play, Fullerton Police Sergeant Ryan O’Neil noted that this could change as the investigation progresses. Blas's family, however, has expressed deep concern that hazing may have played a role in his death. They are seeking a complete and transparent investigation and are questioning why 911 was not called when Blas was found unresponsive.

"One of the most troubling questions for our family is why 911 was not called when Anthony was found unresponsive," the family said in a statement. "We want to know what happened in the hours leading up to his death, who was present, when those present realized he was in distress, and why 911 was never contacted." The family described Blas as a fun, loving, and unforgettable person who was excited about his future. They have started an online fundraiser to help cover funeral costs and to raise awareness about unrecognized fraternities and organizations. Their goal is to work with lawmakers, educators, and communities to promote stronger awareness and education for incoming college students about the risks associated with unofficial groups.

CSUF released a statement expressing condolences to Blas's family and the campus community, acknowledging the student's death at an off-campus residence.
