California State Workers Strike Over Pay, Benefits, and Remote Work Policies

California state workers began a one-day strike on Wednesday, protesting the administration of Gov. Gavin Newsom over contract negotiations concerning pay, healthcare access, and remote work flexibility. SEIU Local 1000, representing over 100,000 state employees including auditors, nurses, and counselors, organized picket lines in multiple cities across the state.

This marks the first statewide strike for the union since its founding in 2004. Members overwhelmingly authorized the strike after their contract expired in June, with the union accusing the state of failing to negotiate in good faith. Anica Walls, SEIU Local 1000 president, stated, "We are going on strike because we know the Newsom administration can and must do better. They must return to the table and bargain in good faith toward a contract that allows state workers to afford groceries, childcare, rent and other necessities."

The strike follows a mandate issued by Newsom requiring state workers to return to the office four days a week by July 1. Newsom has asserted that this policy will enhance workplace collaboration and innovation, ultimately improving public service. He previously vetoed a union-backed bill that would have required state agencies to provide written justification for mandating in-office work.

The California Department of Human Resources acknowledged the strike, stating it is coordinating with the union and state departments to implement contingency plans to mitigate potential disruptions to government operations. A department statement indicated, "The department remains focused on achieving a fair and responsible agreement and continues to be available at the bargaining table."

The union contends that remote work arrangements offer cost savings for the state through reduced office space expenses and enhance employees' work-life balance. Additionally, SEIU Local 1000 is advocating for a 20% salary increase for workers over the next three years and a greater state contribution towards employee healthcare costs.
