California State University San Marcos Reports Four Sexual Assaults in Early Fall Semester
University officials confirm investigations into incidents occurring since the start of the academic year.
California State University San Marcos is investigating four alleged sexual assaults that have occurred since the beginning of the fall semester. The incidents involved female students who reported knowing their aggressors.
The first assault was reported on September 5 at The Quad Residence Hall, followed by a second on September 6 at the off-campus University Village Apartments. Subsequent incidents occurred at Black Oak Hall on September 13 and again at The Quad on September 18.
University spokesperson Jerry McCormick stated that the subjects involved in the assaults appeared to know each other, suggesting a connection between the incidents. "Sexual assault is never acceptable and is never the survivor's fault. Consent must be affirmative, voluntary and ongoing," McCormick said in a statement. "We are taking what these women say seriously, and the University Police Department is investigating."
In response to the reports, the university has increased security patrols and is collaborating with housing management to enhance campus safety measures. McCormick noted that the University Police Department (UPD) is augmenting its patrols, and the campus security escort service is available upon request.
To protect the privacy of the victims, the university has released limited details regarding the investigations. Campus police records indicate that no arrests have been made to date.
The university offers year-round bystander intervention training and confidential advocacy resources for students. A statement released by the school confirmed the increased security presence and joint efforts with housing management to improve campus safety.
