California Single Earners Need $127K to Live Comfortably, Study Finds

A single adult in California needs to earn $126,797 annually before taxes to live comfortably, according to a new report by financial planning site SmartAsset. This figure places individuals earning $100,000 approximately $27,000 below the threshold for financial ease, largely due to the state's high rents, gas prices, taxes, and persistent inflation.

The required income for comfortable living in California has increased by 6.1% in the past year, marking the fourth-largest rise among U.S. states. Only Montana, New York, and Maine experienced steeper year-over-year increases. California is now the third most expensive state for single residents, trailing only Hawaii ($129,002) and Massachusetts ($127,213).

SmartAsset defined 'comfortable' living by applying the 50/30/20 budgeting rule to basic cost of living data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. This rule allocates 50% of after-tax income to necessities like housing, food, and utilities; 30% to wants and discretionary spending; and 20% to savings or debt repayment.

For families, the financial demands are even higher. A household with two working adults and two children requires an annual income of $302,682 to live comfortably in California.

In contrast, West Virginia is the most affordable state for single earners, requiring $81,245 annually. For families, Mississippi is the least expensive, with a required income of $187,533.

While California's cost of comfortable living rose, six states saw a decline in their required income for single adults: Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas.

The study also highlighted the significant cost of living in California's major cities. A separate analysis by SmartAsset found that a single person in San Jose needs $158,080 to live comfortably, while residents of Irvine, Anaheim, and Santa Ana require $151,965. For families, San Francisco was estimated to require a combined income of $407,597 for a family of four.
