California Schools Break East Coast Dominance in Top Private High School Rankings

Two California private high schools have achieved top-10 status in Niche’s annual rankings of the nation's best private high schools, a list historically dominated by East Coast institutions.

Harvard-Westlake School ranked No. 7 and Stanford Online High School placed No. 10 on Niche’s “2027 Best Private High Schools in America” list. This marks a notable achievement for West Coast educational institutions.

Harvard-Westlake, an independent, co-ed college preparatory school, serves approximately 1,600 students in grades 7 through 12. It operates with two distinct campuses: a middle school (grades 7-9) located in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, and a high school (grades 10-12) situated in Studio City, about seven miles away.

Stanford Online High School, which offers classes to around 1,000 students in grades 7 through 12, functions under the direct operation of Stanford University. While primarily an online institution, students can participate in clubs and student government. The school also organizes in-person social events, including Homecoming gatherings held at Stanford University's main campus in Palo Alto or in other major cities.

Tuition for Harvard-Westlake is $54,900 for the 2026-2027 school year, while Stanford Online High School's tuition is $31,900 for full-time students.

The top-ranked school on the list was Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, founded in 1778, making it the oldest incorporated academy in the United States.

Harvard-Westlake has faced controversy in recent months. In June, court documents detailed allegations against a Harvard-Westlake water polo player, including an incident where the student allegedly told a Jewish peer to "die in an oven" and used antisemitic slurs. The player was also accused of racism and sexual assault against teammates. Another student, Lucca van der Woude, son of a Hollywood director, was reportedly accused of sexually assaulting two teammates and using racial slurs against a Black teammate.
