A candidate for the Elk Grove Unified School District board has apologized for a series of social media posts containing derogatory language, including slurs against people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The posts, which appear to date from 2025 and 2026, resurfaced on Reddit and have led to multiple endorsements being rescinded.

Kirk Thomson, who is running for a trustee position, admitted to using hurtful language in posts on X, formerly Twitter. One post, in response to a question about the use of the slur 'retard,' stated, "only when describing Democrat politicians and their ideas." The account associated with Thomson allegedly used the term multiple times, suggesting it was "making a comeback," and also used "gay" as a slur.

Thomson issued a statement acknowledging the offensive nature of his past remarks. "Old posts from my personal Twitter account surfaced this week, and I used language that is hurtful to people with disabilities. That was wrong. I am genuinely sorry for it. No excuses. I own it," he said. He also emphasized his personal connection to disability issues, stating, "This isn't abstract for me. My own child has a disability, and my family knows firsthand what it takes to get kids like ours the support they deserve. That’s why I’m running: for stronger special ed programs and real transparency from the EGUSD board."

Despite his apology, the resurfaced posts have prompted criticism from elected officials and law enforcement groups. School board trustee Heidi Moore rescinded her endorsement of Thomson, stating, "after becoming aware of the comments, I have decided to rescind my previous endorsement of his candidacy." Republican Assemblymember Josh Hoover echoed this sentiment, calling Thomson's language "unacceptable, especially for an individual seeking to represent students and families on the school board."

Several law enforcement organizations, including the Elk Grove Police Officers Association and the Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, also withdrew their support. They indicated that Thomson's remarks "do not reflect the values or standards" upheld by their members.

Thomson is challenging incumbent Michael Vargas. His platform includes improving fiscal oversight and increasing transparency within the school board. Previously, Thomson has voiced opinions on controversial topics, such as advocating for a ban on transgender students participating in girls' sports.
