California's Giant Artichoke Restaurant Closing Doors After 25 Years

The Giant Artichoke, a well-known restaurant in Castroville, California, will cease operations on Wednesday, September 30, after 25 years under its current ownership. The owners announced the closure in a Facebook post on Monday, citing the sale of the building by its owners.

"We’ve had the Restaurant for 25 years and it’s been an honor serving our community and faithful customers, buts time to move on," the post stated. "The building owners are selling the building and we are willing to sell our recipes no one though has really stepped up though. We still have some fried artichokes and when these finish that’s it, sorry for the late news and Thank You."

The restaurant, a landmark in Castroville, was famous for its menu featuring artichoke and angel hair pasta, fried artichoke hearts, artichoke bread, and an artichoke burger, alongside other dishes. It also featured a distinctive 20-foot-tall artichoke statue outside, originally installed in 1963 by the restaurant's founder, Ray Bei.

In April, the building's owner, Daniel Boudreault, had indicated that the property was available for sale or lease, and that the restaurant's operators were planning to retire. The property, measuring 3,726 square feet, is listed for $1.8 million for purchase or $9,500 per month for lease.

Castroville, often referred to as the "Artichoke Center of the World," is responsible for producing nearly two-thirds of the United States' artichoke supply. The closure of The Giant Artichoke follows the previous cancellation of Castroville's annual artichoke festival, which began in 1959.
