California Ranks Ninth Nationally for Student Loan Payments

California ranks ninth in the nation for average monthly student loan payments, with residents paying an average of $237 per month, according to a recent WalletHub analysis. This places California as the only Western state among the top 10 states with the highest student loan burdens.

National Student Loan Landscape

Nationwide, approximately 42.6 million Americans collectively owe $1.72 trillion in student loans, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The monthly payments can vary significantly across the country. For instance, the median student loan payment in Wyoming is just over $159 per month, while in Vermont, the median is $258, representing a difference of nearly $99.

Vermont leads the nation with the highest average monthly student loan payment at $258. It is followed by Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, and Connecticut, which comprise the top five. The analysis highlights that these substantial monthly payments can lead to extended payoff timelines for borrowers.

California's Unique Position

Despite the high monthly payments, California holds a comparatively low overall student debt burden, ranking 49th out of 50 states in a separate study. This may be linked to the state's significant emphasis on public higher education. California is home to around 150 public colleges and universities across the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and California Community Colleges (CCC) systems.

Approximately 83% of college-age students in California attend public institutions. Data from the Public Policy Institute of California indicates that California freshmen are 44% less likely to take out student loans compared to their national counterparts.

Understanding Loan Repayment

For borrowers with an average student loan debt of nearly $40,500 and a 6.52% fixed interest rate (the federal rate for undergraduate loans), making monthly payments of about $302 would be necessary to clear the balance within 20 years. The significant variation in monthly payments across states underscores the diverse financial realities faced by student loan borrowers nationwide. Washington state ranked 21st, with Oregon following at 22nd in monthly payment averages.
