Caltrans is providing free HEPA air purifiers to eligible households in Southern California communities that may experience reduced air quality due to the upcoming closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The initiative targets residents living near designated detour routes in Wilmington, San Pedro, and surrounding areas.
Each qualifying household can receive one Medify Air MA-40 purifier, equipped with True HEPA H13 filters designed to capture particles such as dust, smoke, pollen, and pet dander. The program also includes three replacement filters. These purifiers typically retail for several hundred dollars.
The giveaway is intended to protect indoor air quality for residents whose homes are situated within 750 feet of official detour or alternate routes. These routes include sections of Pacific Coast Highway, Anaheim Street, Harry Bridges Boulevard, Alameda Street, and Gaffey Street, as well as the East I Street interchange.
Households believed to be eligible have received postcards from Caltrans containing unique registration codes. To reserve a purifier, residents must enter this code on the program's website. Upon successful registration, an email will be sent with pickup details. Applicants will need to provide proof of residency, such as official mail or a lease agreement, at the time of pickup. A photo ID is optional.
The program is scheduled to run through June 2027, with a reservation and waitlist deadline of May 1. The initiative seeks to address potential increases in traffic and associated pollution that may pass by residential areas during the bridge closure and subsequent construction.
