Aida Burkins, a 22-year-old mother of two from Hemet, California, received a diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma after a flight to Chicago led to a series of concerning health symptoms. What began as her ears failing to pop on a plane journey evolved into a months-long medical investigation.

Upon returning home from her trip, Burkins experienced a rapid deterioration in her health. She reported bleeding from her nose when bent at a 90-degree angle, worsening hearing loss, increased fatigue, and unintentional weight loss. Despite consulting multiple doctors and undergoing various tests, she was initially dismissed with advice suggesting lingering altitude sickness.

Her condition eventually prompted a more thorough examination, during which a doctor identified a mass obstructing her Eustachian tube. This discovery led to a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. The specialist observed the mass, suspecting it could be cancerous, though Burkins' young age made this less likely in their initial assessment. It was also determined that her adenoids were severely inflamed and required removal.

While awaiting biopsy results, the left side of her throat began to swell, necessitating a second biopsy. Medical professionals noted the unusual nature of her symptoms. CT scans later revealed extensive tumor involvement, including the cervical lymph nodes at the base of her skull.

In February 2026, Burkins was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a rare form of head and neck cancer originating in the nasopharynx, the upper section of the throat behind the nose. The diagnosis deeply affected Burkins, who expressed her fear of not witnessing her children grow up.

She has since undergone chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which have led to a significant reduction in the tumor size. Doctors are optimistic about her prognosis, with the expectation that she will be cancer-free. Burkins hopes her experience serves as a reminder that cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age. Her children have been a primary source of strength and motivation throughout her treatment.
