A 49-year-old California woman suffered a heart attack and nearly drowned after a series of powerful rogue waves swept her into the ocean during a walk with friends at Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach.
Teresa Tran was walking with friends on Saturday, August 15, when the group was caught off guard by the unexpected surf. Multiple waves knocked them off their feet and pulled them into the water.
Witnesses reported seeing the women struggle against the current as lifeguards responded. While Tran's friends were brought to safety, she remained in the water and became unresponsive.
Lifeguards pulled Tran from the ocean, finding she had only a faint pulse. Her daughter, Amanda Trinh, stated that Tran suffered a heart attack while in the water. Rescuers worked to revive Tran on the sand as a helicopter was summoned to the beach.
Upon being turned over by rescuers, Tran vomited up swallowed water and regained consciousness. She was airlifted to Mission Hospital for further treatment and observation.
Tran has since been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home. Her daughter described Tran as being "horrified" by the experience and unlikely to go near the water again soon. A GoFundMe page was established to assist with medical expenses, including the helicopter evacuation and hospital care not fully covered by insurance.
