California Mom of Three Killed in Suspected DUI Hit-and-Run

A California mother of three was killed Tuesday night in a suspected DUI hit-and-run, allegedly by a driver with a prior conviction for driving under the influence. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Fernando Saldana of Escondido, was arrested after striking Vanessa Wheyland near Redwood Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard in Carlsbad.

Wheyland was found in the roadway with severe injuries shortly before 8 p.m. after what friends described as a family walk. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Police apprehended Saldana approximately one mile from the crash site, utilizing evidence from the scene, community tips, and automated license plate readers.

Due to Saldana's previous DUI conviction, prosecutors have charged him with second-degree murder under California's "Watson Murder" doctrine. He also faces charges including leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, driving under the influence causing injury or death, and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Nicole Check, who organized a GoFundMe for Wheyland's family, described her as "a devoted wife, an incredible mother, and a cherished friend whose love and presence touched so many people." Wheyland was a graduate of San Diego State University and served as the CEO of Wheyland Electric, an electrical contracting company serving the Carlsbad and greater San Diego areas.

The crash has intensified concerns among local residents about safety on Carlsbad Boulevard. Neighbors have reported numerous accidents, including fatal ones, along the stretch of road, with each loss deeply affecting the community.

A memorial for Wheyland has been established at Tamarack Beach, where a vigil was planned for Thursday night. Saldana was booked into the Vista Detention Facility and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
