A Monterey man's attempt to protect his girlfriend by fabricating a story of a random stabbing ultimately led to her arrest, authorities said. The man initially told police he was attacked by a stranger on July 2 in the 2300 block of North Fremont Street in Monterey.

He presented himself at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with stab wounds and described his assailant as a Hispanic man wearing a red jacket who attacked him without provocation. However, an investigation by local law enforcement, including a search of the area and witness interviews, revealed the man's account to be false.

Investigators shifted their focus to the man's girlfriend, 19-year-old Jerralyn Stringer. Authorities determined that the couple had been involved in an argument at an apartment on Dela Vina Avenue on July 2. During this altercation, Stringer allegedly stabbed her boyfriend multiple times.

Detectives subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for Stringer. She was arrested without incident on Thursday near Gibson Avenue and Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove. Public arrest logs indicate she was booked into the Monterey County Jail on Friday and faces a felony charge of attempted murder. Her bail has been set at $1,000,000.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
