A Northern California man has been reunited with his prized 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle muscle car, which was stolen more than three decades ago. Police in Auburn discovered the black Chevelle during a vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported. While the specific reason for the VIN check was not disclosed, officers noted that during the inspection, they observed something that "warranted a closer look."
It was determined that the classic car had been stolen in 1993 from San Mateo County, over 150 miles away from where it was found. The owner, whose identity was not released, was reunited with his vehicle. The CHP shared a photo of the owner with his car, stating, "After more than three decades, this classic is finally back where it belongs."
With assistance from the San Mateo Police Department, investigators were able to confirm the car's history and facilitate its return to the original owner. The circumstances surrounding the theft and the intervening years remain unclear, and the individuals responsible have not been identified. The car was reportedly still in excellent condition.
