California Man, Nephew Vanish on Fishing Trip During Tropical Storm
Oscar Ulloa and his 12-year-old nephew were last heard from on October 10th as Tropical Storm Rachel moved through the region.
A fishing trip off the coast of Baja California turned into a desperate search when Oscar Ulloa and his 12-year-old nephew disappeared amidst dangerous weather brought by Tropical Storm Rachel. The pair set out on Saturday, October 10, and have not been heard from since.
Ulloa's cousin, Alistair Barradell, shared the family's plea for information on Facebook, stating, "My family is going through a very difficult time right now." He added, "My cousin Oscar is missing at sea in the Sea of Cortez near San Felipe, Baja California, along with his 12-year-old nephew."
A search effort is underway, involving both Mexican naval authorities and the family. Mexican authorities have deployed six units and a specialized search aircraft, covering over 9,900 square nautical miles. The family has also hired a private plane to assist in the search.
Barradell told NBC San Diego that the family is unsure if the boat experienced engine trouble or a more catastrophic event as the weather deteriorated. "During that time, the weather did turn bad, so we're not sure if we had engine problems or something more catastrophic," he said.
During the search, crews reportedly spotted a cooler and a life jacket, though authorities have not confirmed any connection to the missing vessel. Barradell urged anyone who has been fishing or traveling in the Sea of Cortez to remain vigilant and report any relevant information.
"You never know who might see it or who might have information that could help," Barradell wrote. "Any information could make a difference. Please keep Oscar and the young boy in your thoughts and prayers. Please share, share, share. Help us bring them home."
