A California man has died after jumping into Shasta Lake in an attempt to rescue his dog. Geordan White, 60, of Redding, was on a boat on Friday morning when his dog fell into the water. White immediately entered the lake after his pet.
The incident occurred near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch. A person on a nearby vessel called 911 dispatchers after observing White begin to struggle in the water and attempting to assist by throwing him a flotation device. Authorities stated that White was unable to hold onto the device and subsequently submerged.
A dive team later recovered White's body from the lake. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the official cause of death.
The dog was rescued from the water by the 911 caller. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to White’s family and friends, also issuing a reminder for the public to always wear personal flotation devices when on the water.
White was a member of the local music community, and a Facebook tribute noted that he "was one of the good ones and you will be missed."
