California Man Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Dozens of Pomegranates

A man in California has been identified as a suspect in the theft of dozens of pomegranates from a Del Rey orchard. Leopoldo Leon Zaragoza, 52, is facing petty theft charges after allegedly stealing the fruit.

Authorities were alerted to the crop theft on September 28. Surveillance footage from a mobile solar-powered security trailer captured a suspect gathering pomegranates and packing them into several bags. Detectives from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Agricultural Crimes Task Force investigated and identified the suspect as Zaragoza, who resides near the farm.

The Sheriff’s Office is advising local farmers to install surveillance equipment to protect their property. They released a statement on their Instagram page seeking information about Zaragoza, offering a potential cash reward for anonymous tips.

Agricultural theft is a significant issue in California, with farmers reportedly losing approximately $30 million annually, according to the Valley Ag Voice. However, some social media users have expressed criticism of the intensive effort to apprehend the suspect, suggesting that law enforcement resources could be better allocated to more serious crimes.

Leopoldo Leon Zaragoza, 52, is now named a ‘crop crook’ by the Fresno sheriff’s office and the Agriculture Crimes Task Force, which submitted petty theft charges against Zaragoza for allegedly stealing dozens of fruits from Orchards
