California residents embarking on Labor Day weekend getaways are likely to encounter substantial traffic delays and elevated fuel costs, according to a report from mobility analytics firm INRIX and AAA.
The holiday travel period is characterized by a concentrated surge in departures, creating a bottleneck unlike other major holidays where travel is more dispersed.
Peak Travel Times and Congestion Hotspots
INRIX anticipates the most severe getaway traffic to occur on Thursday and Friday afternoons, coinciding with regular commuter traffic. Travelers planning to depart on Friday are advised to leave before noon to avoid peak congestion between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Saturday morning may offer a brief respite, but delays are expected to resume between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday is projected to have minimal traffic disruptions. However, the return journey on Labor Day Monday will see a significant spike in congestion, particularly between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Southern California's major vacation routes are expected to bear the brunt of the congestion. Interstate 5 South, from Los Angeles to San Diego, is predicted to experience its worst bottleneck on Friday around 6 p.m., potentially extending travel times to over five hours, a 75% increase from normal conditions.
For those heading towards desert destinations, Interstate 15 North from San Diego to Palm Springs could see travel times surge by 50% on Thursday at 5:45 p.m., reaching up to four hours and 12 minutes. Northbound travelers on Interstate 80 East from San Francisco to Sacramento may face an 81% traffic spike on Friday at 4:45 p.m., turning a typical short drive into a nearly five-hour ordeal.
Fuel Costs Add to Travel Burden
Compounding the driving difficulties, California drivers are facing significantly higher gasoline prices compared to the national average. While the national average stands around $4.14 per gallon, the statewide average in California is approximately $5.80 per gallon. Drivers in San Diego County are seeing prices around $5.92, and in Los Angeles County, the average is $5.85, according to AAA.
