A man held captive in a car trunk was fatally shot by his suspected abductor in front of police officers in Chino Hills, California, authorities reported. The confrontation concluded with both the victim and the suspect dead.

The incident began Wednesday evening when officers initiated a traffic stop in connection with a possible kidnapping. The driver of the targeted Nissan failed to pull over, leading deputies on a pursuit that ended in a driveway on Wandering Ridge Drive.

During the stop, officers ordered two occupants out of the vehicle. The passenger complied, exiting the car with his hands raised. The driver, however, approached the trunk of the vehicle and fired a shot into it, hitting the victim inside. The suspect then reportedly fired at deputies, who returned fire, killing the driver. The victim, who was already inside the trunk, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was also pronounced dead at the scene. A third individual, who was in the passenger seat, was taken into custody. No officers were injured during the exchange.

Home surveillance footage captured portions of the deadly encounter. Investigators believe the victim was shot and placed in the trunk at the same location where neighbors initially heard gunshots and calls reporting gunfire.

Authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public and no additional suspects are being sought. The motive for the kidnapping and shooting remains under investigation. Neighbors expressed shock and concern, with some speculating about a possible connection to the victim, suggesting the suspects may have known each other.

Police have released limited details regarding the events leading up to the initial shooting and alleged abduction. Residents were advised to expect a continued police presence in the area as the investigation and evidence collection proceed.
