California Hotels Lead Nation in Michelin Three-Key Awards
The state boasts the most high-end accommodations recognized by the prestigious guide, featuring properties in Los Angeles, Napa Valley, and Big Sur.
California has emerged as the leading U.S. state in the 2026 Michelin Guide's hotel awards, securing the highest number of prestigious three-key distinctions. These accolades, reserved for hotels described by Michelin as offering "the ultimate in comfort and service, style and elegance," place California hotels at the pinnacle of luxury accommodation nationwide.
Globally, only 155 hotels have earned the coveted three-key rating, with an additional 657 properties receiving two keys and 2,020 earning one key. This year, several California establishments have joined this elite group.
In Los Angeles, two historic hotels received three keys. The Beverly Hills Hotel, an icon of old Hollywood glamour since its opening in 1912, was noted for its classic architecture and celebrity clientele, including Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Despite recent renovations, the hotel retains its vintage charm. It achieved a 19.2 out of 20 score from guests on the Michelin Guide, with nightly rates starting at $2,040.
Also in Los Angeles, the Hotel Bel-Air, nestled behind lush vegetation on Sunset Boulevard, was recognized for its secluded bungalow-style accommodations and notable cuisine. Prices for this celebrity-favored retreat begin at $1,785 per night.
Beyond Los Angeles, California's renowned wine regions also boast top-tier accommodations. Meadowood in Napa Valley earned a three-key rating for its amenities, which include a newly renovated fitness center, three pools, and extensive hiking trails. The property also features a wine center offering classes and tastings, with rooms starting at $1,750 per night.
The SingleThread Inn in Healdsburg was highlighted as "one of the most luxurious experiences in California." This exclusive property offers only five rooms and is connected to a highly acclaimed restaurant, with rates commencing at $3,000 per night.
Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, situated in the heart of Napa Valley, offers a Mediterranean-inspired experience with panoramic views of vineyards and olive groves. Its restaurant features an extensive wine list of 15,000 bottles, and room rates start at $1,300 per night.
Rounding out the three-key winners is Big Sur's Post Ranch Inn. This cliffside hotel is celebrated for its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and unique "tree house" suites perched on stilts amidst redwood trees. Notably, the rooms do not feature televisions, emphasizing the natural surroundings. A stay here begins at a minimum of $1,800 per night.
