California High School Football Season Canceled Amid Investigation; Parents Outraged

Hollister High School in California has suspended its undefeated football season due to an undisclosed investigation into the team's activities. The decision has left parents of the players seeking answers and expressing anger over the abrupt cancellation and perceived lack of transparency from school officials.

The school, located in the Central Coast region, announced the season's suspension on Monday. Officials cited student privacy concerns and stated that the number of available student-athletes was insufficient to safely continue the season. This announcement came after the team had achieved a 3-0 record.

The investigation reportedly began on September 10, and the team forfeited its scheduled game against Alisal on September 17. Head football coach Thomas Sullivan was placed on paid administrative leave concurrently with the start of the review.

Parents of the players have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the school's handling of the situation. They claim that the team has more than 60 players, making the school's explanation about insufficient numbers to field a team seem unlikely. The abrupt nature of the suspension also caught parents by surprise, with no advance notice given.

A significant point of contention for parents is the substantial amount of funds raised for the football program. Records indicate that over $78,000 was raised in the past two years. Parents are demanding an explanation regarding the allocation of these funds now that the season has been cut short.

A meeting hosted by the San Benito High School District is scheduled to address the matter, where parents are expected to voice their concerns. However, parents expressed low expectations for receiving a clear explanation, stating their desire for answers and their belief that transparency will be limited.

Hollister High School's last game before the suspension was a 27-20 victory against Wilcox on September 11.
