California Heat Wave Prompts Beach Water Advisories Due to Elevated Bacteria Levels

Los Angeles County health officials have issued advisories against swimming, surfing, and entering ocean waters at multiple beaches due to elevated bacteria levels that exceed state health standards. The warnings come as a significant heat wave continues to scorch California, leading residents to seek relief at the coast.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated that the high bacteria counts increase the risk of illness. The affected areas include portions of Santa Monica Beach, Paradise Cove, Redondo Beach, Venice Beach, Topanga County Beach, and Manhattan Beach. The extent of the advisories varies by location, ranging from 100 yards of shoreline to entire designated swimming zones.

The current heat wave is expected to persist for several more days, with unseasonably high temperatures anticipated to last into mid-October. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for areas stretching from Southern California through Central California and into the Bay Area. Forecasters attribute the prolonged warm spell partly to a strong El Niño pattern and above-normal sea surface temperatures.

Some beaches, such as Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, have had their advisories lifted following recent water sample results showing bacteria levels within acceptable limits. However, other popular locations continue to face challenges. Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card has assigned 'F' grades to Redondo Beach and the Manhattan Beach Pier area, while Malibu Lagoon received a 'C'.
