Bodie State Historic Park, nestled in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains of California, preserves the remnants of a once-thriving Gold Rush mining camp. The town, now a state park, features numerous weathered buildings, including a saloon, church, and general stores, many still containing their original furnishings, presenting a rare glimpse into a bygone era.

Located northeast of Yosemite National Park, Bodie is situated off Highway 395 on SR 270, near Bridgeport. While Native American tribes inhabited the region historically, the California Gold Rush transformed it into a bustling community. By 1879, Bodie was home to approximately 8,500 residents, with over 2,000 buildings serving the populace. The town developed a reputation for lawlessness, marked by frequent gunfights, robberies, and brawls. During this period, Chinese settlers also established a community on the outskirts, supplying firewood to the town and railway company.

The town's prosperity began to wane in the early 1880s due to economic decline and devastating fires. Many residents departed as the boom faded. The surviving portion of Bodie was designated a State Historic Park and National Historic Landmark in 1932.

Today, Bodie is maintained in a state of "arrested decay," with over 100 original structures still standing. Visitors can explore buildings such as gambling halls, homes, a schoolhouse, and a morgue. A stamp mill, where millions in gold and silver were processed, is also open for tours.

A local legend warns of a "Bodie curse," stipulating that taking any item from the town, however small, will bring bad luck until the item is returned. Park officials report regularly receiving packages containing items that visitors had previously taken from the site.

Bodie State Historic Park is accessible year-round, though winter conditions with sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and heavy snow can make access challenging. Admission fees are $8 for adults and $5 for children, with free entry for those aged 3 and under. The park also offers daily history talks and photography workshops throughout the year.
