California Firefighters Rescue Two Women and Four Dogs from Raging River
Swiftwater rescue crews navigated treacherous currents to save the stranded individuals and their pets.
Two women and their four dogs were rescued from a rapidly rising river in San Bernardino, California, after their homeless encampment became an island due to monsoon rains. San Bernardino County firefighters responded to the scene around noon on Sunday, receiving reports of the stranded group along the Santa Ana River near E Street.
Swiftwater rescue teams deployed an inflatable boat to reach the women, who were trapped by the surging floodwaters. Rescuers fitted the women with life jackets before transporting them back to dry land. The dogs were secured in a mesh bag for their safe passage across the river. Officials stated that all individuals and animals were safely returned without any reported injuries.
The rescue occurred as Tropical Storm Rachel brought significant rainfall and high winds to Southern California, causing widespread damage. In Long Beach, sections of a historic boardwalk were destroyed by large waves, and several homes were rendered unsafe due to structural damage. The storm's impact highlighted the dangers posed by extreme weather events, from coastal erosion to inland flooding.
