California Father Dies of West Nile Virus Amid Soaring Regional Mosquito Activity
A California man's death from West Nile Virus highlights a surge in mosquito detections across Orange County, reaching historic levels.
An Anaheim father of five has died from West Nile Virus, a tragedy his wife describes as particularly devastating given his prior recovery from a severe motorcycle accident. Daniel Clavel, 61, passed away last week after a month-long battle with the disease, which causes brain swelling.
His wife, Tracey Clavel, recounted finding her husband unconscious on their home floor last month. He was rushed to the hospital and intubated but never regained consciousness. "He left us for people to be aware," Tracey Clavel told ABC 7, reflecting on the circumstances of his death.
Daniel had previously survived a near-fatal motorcycle crash in 2013 that doctors predicted would leave him paralyzed. "So that’s why this situation is even harder because he beat the odds of the motorcycle accident, but a mosquito took him, and I don’t understand it," she stated.
West Nile Virus symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. A rash is also a common indicator. Most individuals infected do not experience symptoms, with most cases developing two to six days after an infected mosquito bite.
The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District has reported a record number of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus this year, with 757 positive samples detected. Anaheim has recorded the highest number of positive samples within the county, totaling 165.
Brian Brannon of the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District noted the widespread nature of the current outbreak, with significant activity reported in Anaheim, Fullerton, Buena Park, and Los Alamitos, and a gradual spread to southern and eastern parts of the county.
Health officials recommend that residents use insect repellent, eliminate standing water around their homes, and wear protective clothing during peak mosquito activity, typically at dusk and dawn.
The Orange County Health Care Agency is investigating Daniel Clavel's death. The agency's website indicates 21 West Nile Virus cases have been reported in the area so far this year.
