California Donor Family Linked to Suspected Chinese Spy Under Renewed Scrutiny
The Yin family, which has contributed millions to Democratic campaigns, faces questions about their past connections to individuals associated with alleged Chinese espionage.
A California family that has heavily funded Democratic political campaigns is facing renewed scrutiny over their past associations with individuals linked to a suspected Chinese spy. The Yin family, which amassed wealth through McDonald's franchises, has donated over $4.4 million to state and federal political causes, including significant contributions to prominent Democrats like Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
This scrutiny intensified following the release of FBI files detailing interactions between Fang Fang, also known as Christine Fang, and individuals connected to the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs (APAPA) organization. According to the documents and reporting by CBS News, CC Yin, the 89-year-old patriarch of the Yin family and a co-founder of APAPA, had a working relationship with Fang through the organization. FBI interviews with former California Rep. Eric Swalwell indicated that Fang served as his point of contact for APAPA.
While the FBI files mention the APAPA official who directed Swalwell to Fang, the name is redacted. However, CBS News reported that two individuals familiar with the documents identified this person as CC Yin.
There is no evidence suggesting the Yin family was aware of Fang's alleged espionage activities, nor have they been accused by U.S. law enforcement of acting as foreign agents. CC Yin provided a statement to CBS News asserting his love for America and condemning any foreign interference in U.S. politics.
Campaign finance records reveal the extent of the Yin family's political contributions. Their McDonald's franchise business donated approximately $364,817 to campaigns supporting Gavin Newsom, an additional $80,000 to his 2019 inauguration committee, and $50,000 to a nonprofit directed by Newsom. Contributions to other Democratic figures include $221,700 to Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis' campaigns between 2018 and 2025, and $214,300 to Kamala Harris' campaigns from 2019 to 2024. Former California Treasurer John Chiang received $115,680, and Rep. Ro Khanna's congressional campaigns have received $15,800 since 2017.
Henry Yin, CC Yin's brother, has been photographed alongside Newsom, including during the governor's 2023 trip to China. National security experts have also raised concerns about Henry Yin's documented meetings in China with officials associated with the Chinese government's United Front system, which is known for cultivating relationships abroad.
Cheryl Yu, a fellow at The Jamestown Foundation, commented to CBS News on the United Front's methods, stating, "This is how the United Front works. They build these friendly, long-term relationships, then at some point they make requests."
