More than 11,000 California drivers are facing the potential cancellation of their licenses after the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) discovered "irregularities" related to their written driving tests. These drivers, who successfully passed their exams between July 2025 and April 2026, have been issued a stark ultimatum: retake the written test within 30 days or risk having their license revoked.
The ominous letters sent by the DMV state that the drivers' "written driver’s license test results indicate non-compliance with the driver testing criteria required by state law." The agency has provided minimal explanation regarding the specific nature of these alleged testing issues and has not accused affected drivers of cheating.
"Ensuring the integrity of our testing process is essential," the DMV said in a statement. "Knowledge tests play a critical role in confirming that drivers understand the rules of the road before they are licensed to drive in California."
Compounding the inconvenience, drivers cannot simply walk into a local DMV office to complete the retest. The warning letter mandates that they must schedule a formal appointment and present the physical letter as proof when they arrive.
