California Couple Arrested in Park Shooting Death of Son-in-Law
Authorities allege a couple in their late 70s fatally shot their son-in-law in a park, amid a contentious custody dispute with their daughter.
A couple in their late 70s have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, 40, in a Dublin, California park on Saturday afternoon. Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 76 and residents of Dublin.
A police sergeant on patrol witnessed the incident in the parking lot of a sports complex and observed witnesses pointing to the couple, who remained near the scene. Authorities have not yet confirmed if either suspect has obtained legal representation, and phone numbers associated with their daughter, Candice Jang, were disconnected.
McKinsey, who was employed as a gaming engineer for The New York Times, was killed a week before a scheduled hearing in his divorce case with Jang. Court documents indicate the couple married around 2012 and have three young children. Jang had previously reported McKinsey to the police in 2023, alleging he had shoved one of their children and engaged in generally harsh physical discipline. Last October, she obtained a domestic violence protection order against him following his arrest and charges of misdemeanor child abuse. At the time of his death, McKinsey was out on bail and seeking entry into a mental health diversion program.
In response to Jang's court filings, McKinsey had sought a domestic violence protection order against her and initiated divorce proceedings. Court documents revealed he had been requesting increased visitation time with their children, noting that his supervised visits had been limited to two hours per week since the previous fall.
McKinsey, who was transgender, alleged in his petition for a protection order that Chen had used anti-LGBTQ+ slurs directed at him and one of their children. He also accused Jang of being abusive during his gender transition-related medical procedures. McKinsey joined The New York Times in January 2023, serving as director of engineering for New York Times Games. A spokesperson for the Times declined to comment further on the matter.
