Fresno, California, implemented a nighttime curfew crackdown for individuals under 18, resulting in hundreds of contacts and the safe return of 228 juveniles to their parents or guardians. The two-week operation, which ran from June 10 to June 24, aimed to reduce crime and ensure a safe summer for young people.
The Fresno Police Department stated that "Operation Safe Summer was a success," with officers enforcing the curfew every night between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The department emphasized that the primary focus was the safety of the juveniles contacted, and no administrative citations were issued. Instead, parents and guardians were educated on the municipal code pertaining to curfew laws.
Beyond curfew violations, the broader operation led to over 560 arrests, including 260 felony arrests and 306 misdemeanors. Police also arrested 87 gang members and seized 38 firearms. The initiative included hundreds of parole and probation searches, resulting in 17 parole and 38 probation arrests. Additionally, approximately 3,000 traffic and pedestrian stops were conducted, leading to nearly 1,000 citations.
The department reported that proactive efforts contributed to a 10% year-to-date reduction in homicides and a decrease in shootings. However, despite the curfew operation, criminal activity involving teens has continued. Fresno police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday night in Northwest Fresno, where a 19-year-old victim, Edgar Hernandez, died from a gunshot wound. A 13-year-old juvenile has been arrested and booked on manslaughter charges in connection with the shooting.
Separately, officers are investigating a stabbing incident that occurred Wednesday morning near Sunnyside High School. A teenage boy was found with a stab wound to the chest and transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. A 17-year-old male was subsequently arrested in connection with this crime. Investigators noted that the victim and his brother, who was found hiding nearby, were uncooperative, providing few details about the attack.
