California Chef Moving Fine Dining Restaurant to His Garage
Chef Michael Warring plans to reopen his 18-seat eatery in his Vallejo home's garage by next year, citing a desire for creative freedom and cost savings.

Chef Michael Warring, whose eponymous fine-dining restaurant has been the sole establishment of its kind in Vallejo, California, for 14 years, will close his current location by the end of 2026. Warring plans to relaunch the New American eatery next year from his home's garage, a move he described as a way to achieve greater creative freedom and reduce operational costs.
"If our restaurant was a more intimate, close-knit thing, this is going to be that on steroids," Warring told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I just wanted a space where I could be completely free. Every limitation that we’ve had with a more traditionally styled restaurant is now gone overnight."
Warring, who operates the restaurant with his wife, Ali Gulczynski, stated that this transition will significantly cut expenses, particularly rent and childcare costs. He envisions the garage setup as a more personal dining experience.
"We’re imagining what it means to welcome people into our home. To create a restaurant that feels less like a place you visit and more like a place you’re invited into. To make the experience smaller, more intentional, and even more connected to the people sitting around the table," Warring wrote in a Facebook post announcing the change.
The current restaurant, located in Vallejo's Hiddenbrooke Plaza, is an 18-seat establishment that Warring opened in 2012. It operates with fixed-price tasting menus: a 7-course option for $94 and a 12-course option for $134. Dishes have included cream of broccolini, crispy duck confit, wild mushrooms, and nectarine sorbet.
Warring, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, has prior experience working in notable kitchens, including the Auberge du Soleil resort in Napa Valley. He sees the move to his garage as an opportunity to rebrand and further define the restaurant's identity.
"I’ve never labeled the restaurant," Warring said. "Now that a big chunk of the overhead is gone, there’s so much leeway that I’m going to have. I’m going to take the interim and really try to iron out some personal stuff and try to figure out who I am on some different levels."
The final dinner service at the Vallejo location is scheduled for December 5.
