California Beachgoer Lures Seagull with Pizza to Remove Fishing Line
A man successfully freed a seagull entangled in fishing tackle on a Santa Cruz beach.
A man in Santa Cruz, California, has been hailed as a hero for his quick thinking and gentle approach in rescuing a seagull entangled in fishing line. Shaquile Simpson used a slice of pizza to coax the distressed bird close enough to remove the entanglement.
The incident occurred on a Santa Cruz beach, where Simpson observed the seagull struggling to move across the sand due to fishing line wrapped around its body and beak. In a video shared on social media, Simpson is seen approaching the bird slowly, offering it a piece of pizza to gain its trust and draw it nearer.
Once close enough, Simpson, with assistance from his wife, Cloey Stiers, carefully began to unwind the fishing line. Despite the seagull snapping at him, Simpson remained calm and determined until the hook was removed from its beak. The bird then ran across the sand before flying away.
The rescue video gained significant attention online, with viewers praising Simpson's kindness and patience. Many commended his calm demeanor throughout the rescue operation.
Heather Smith from the Santa Cruz Native Animal Rescue stated that fishing tackle entanglement is one of the most common issues they encounter due to the area's location. She advised the public to contact animal rescue organizations if they find an injured bird, rather than attempting to remove hooks themselves, as this can lead to infections.
Smith also expressed interest in recruiting Simpson and Stiers as volunteers for their organization, highlighting their compassionate actions and suitability for wildlife rescue work.
