California Beach Town Hosts Inaugural "Breakawave Rodeo"

Avila Beach, a small coastal town in California, recently traded its usual tranquil atmosphere for the excitement of thousands of attendees during the inaugural Beach BreakaWave Rodeo. The event, held from September 24 to September 26, transformed the popular beach into a unique rodeo venue.

The rodeo featured traditional events such as bronc riding, breakaway roping, and barrel racing, adapted for a sandy, seaside environment. A distinctive competition involved coastal cowboys and cowgirls using tow ropes attached to horses to pull skiers across the surf. In addition to the rodeo action, the event included live performances by musicians Jordan Forer and Corb Lund.

The influx of visitors significantly benefited local businesses. Restaurants, shops, and vendors along the boardwalk experienced high demand throughout the festival. "The town was probably as crowded as I’ve ever seen it, and I expect the businesses might have done quite well as well," said Avila Beach resident Edward Colson. Colson also noted that tickets for the sold-out event were difficult to obtain.

Sara Elena Loaiza, who manages a local bed and breakfast, expressed appreciation for events like the BreakaWave Rodeo, highlighting their importance for the town's economy, especially during the non-peak season. "We’re very appreciative of programs that come into Avila, especially right now when it’s non-peak," she told KSBY.

This unique rodeo also serves as a fundraiser with origins tracing back to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cal Poly Rodeo coach Ben Londo conceived the event as a way to provide a safe, open-air venue for student-athletes to practice and compete. What began as a small student gathering has since grown into a significant event and now serves as an official qualifier for major competitions such as Rodeo San Diego.
