California Bar Angers Patrons by Publicly Shaming Low Tippers

A California bar has drawn public criticism for publicly shaming customers over their tipping habits. The Salty Dawg Tavern in Orange allegedly posted a screenshot of a customer's receipt on its Instagram Story over a recent weekend, showing a $375.24 bill with a $20 tip.

Overlaid text on the image reportedly read: "To the four young people served for hours. Spent $400 like a baller and tipped like they were splitting a happy meal." The post was later removed, but screenshots circulated on social media, including on Reddit and the tavern's Facebook page.

Commenters on Reddit expressed outrage, calling for a boycott of the establishment and labeling its actions as "entitled." Many argued that businesses should focus on paying their employees adequately rather than criticizing customers' spending habits. Some users stated that they would not patronize a business that publicly shames its clientele.

The Story was reportedly removed a few hours later but several other screenshots were shared to The Salty Dawg Tavern's Facebook page

Negative reviews subsequently appeared on the tavern's Facebook page, with customers citing the incident as a reason for not recommending the business. The backlash highlights growing consumer frustration with tipping culture.

A recent nationwide survey indicated that 78 percent of Americans find tipping culture to be excessive, with nearly half reporting a reduction in their gratuities in 2026 due to increased financial pressures. Experts suggest consumers are increasingly weary of both the expected tip amounts and the expanding range of services for which tips are solicited.
