Calgary Opera Removes Singer for Displaying Palestinian Flag
Company cites violation of policy against political protest, states performer will be replaced for remaining shows.
The Calgary Opera has removed bass-baritone singer Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from its production of "Tosca" after he displayed a Palestinian flag during the opera's opening-night curtain call. The company stated that the action was unexpected and unauthorized, directly contravening its policy against individual political protest.
In a statement, the opera company said that the performer's actions went against their responsibility to foster a connected, caring, and civil society through shared artistic experiences. They acknowledged that the incident may have caused discomfort to the audience, cast, crew, and staff, and expressed regret for any distress caused. The role of Angelotti, which Sanchez-Ortega was performing, will be filled by another artist for the remaining shows.
Sanchez-Ortega, who posted a video of himself holding the flag on Instagram, stated he has "no regret" over his actions. He claimed that Calgary Opera faced "financial threats" due to his protest and attributed his removal to the current climate for cultural institutions in Canada. He also noted the irony of his role as an escaped political prisoner.
Calgary Opera reiterated that it prohibits all forms of personal protest on its stages and at its events, regardless of the political symbol. The company confirmed that any such display would result in similar consequences and that this policy has been reinforced with all artists and staff. They declined to comment on specific personnel matters beyond stating that the singer would not appear in subsequent performances.
This incident follows a trend of entertainers displaying Palestinian flags during performances. Artists from groups like Gorillaz and Imagine Dragons have also used their platforms to show support for Palestine in recent years. The Calgary Opera's stance emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment for all involved in its productions.
