Cal State Fraternity Linked to Freshman's Death Has Troubled Past

The death of Cal State Fullerton freshman Anthony Joseph Blas, 18, has brought renewed scrutiny to Delta Chi, an unaffiliated fraternity previously recognized by the university. Blas died on September 13 after being found unresponsive at St. Jude Medical Center, reportedly suffering from an alcohol-related medical episode following an off-campus gathering.

Cal State Fullerton revoked Delta Chi's university recognition on April 15, 2021. The revocation was due to allegations of hazing and the "use, possession, manufacture, or distribution" of illegal drugs and alcohol, according to the university's student organization conduct status records. The fraternity's recognition was suspended until January 1, 2029, though this ban could potentially be extended indefinitely.

While it has not been officially confirmed that Delta Chi was directly involved in Blas's death, the gathering he reportedly attended was hosted by the fraternity at its off-campus location. The fraternity's national office stated that they have worked with university officials to inform students that no active Delta Chi chapter exists at Cal State Fullerton. They also expressed a desire for answers regarding the tragedy.

Blas's family has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into his death. In a statement to CBS News, they raised concerns about potential hazing and questioned why 911 was not called immediately after Blas was found unresponsive. The family seeks clarity on the events leading up to his death, including who was present, when his distress was recognized, and why emergency services were not contacted sooner.

Authorities have indicated that alcohol consumption may have been a contributing factor in Blas's death, but they have not found evidence of foul play. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the freshman's death is ongoing.
