Cal Ritchie Aspires to Islanders Center Role Amidst Barzal's Injury
Young forward Cal Ritchie is positioning himself for a coveted center spot on the New York Islanders, capitalizing on Mathew Barzal's current injury.

Cal Ritchie is actively pursuing the New York Islanders' center position, a role he believes is his primary strength, during training camp. This opportunity arises as Mathew Barzal, the team's projected center, is sidelined with inflammation related to a prior left kneecap injury.
During his exit meeting with head coach Pete DeBoer last spring, Ritchie expressed his self-perception as a centerman, despite previous assignments to the wing following Brayden Schenn's arrival at the last trade deadline. This offseason, Ritchie has been placed in a central role during early camp sessions, skating between Schenn and Matias Maccelli, who is considered the initial choice for the spot designated for Barzal.
The Islanders have not definitively ruled out Barzal for opening night, though his return by then appears uncertain. He is not expected to miss an extended period due to the injury. For Ritchie to solidify his place at center, he must consistently perform and seize the opportunity presented.
This upcoming season carries heightened expectations for the 21-year-old Ritchie, who is entering his second year in the NHL. He recently underwent what he described as "easily the craziest offseason I've ever had in terms of training," working with a variety of coaches to enhance his skills.
