Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong stated that the national recognition underscores the value of the university's education and the dedication of its staff and faculty. He emphasized that the 'Learn by Doing' approach prepares students for immediate contributions in their careers, meeting the expectations of students and families investing in higher education.

Within California, Cal Poly ranked fourth among public institutions, following UC San Diego and UC Berkeley. Stanford University was listed as the top overall winner in the ranking. The methodology for the TIME ranking involved analyzing federal data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard.
