WNBA star Caitlin Clark expressed surprise Friday upon learning that LeBron James plans to join the Philadelphia 76ers next season. Clark, speaking to reporters at WNBA All-Star weekend in Chicago, initially thought James might join the Indiana Pacers.
"No way! I just pitched him for the Pacers. It didn’t get to him fast enough," Clark said, reacting to the news. "The 76ers? Wow. Wow."
Clark acknowledged the strength of the 76ers roster, which includes Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, suggesting they could become Eastern Conference favorites alongside teams like the New York Knicks and her own Indiana Pacers. She admitted a personal preference for a hypothetical pairing with Steph Curry on the Golden State Warriors, calling it "absolutely insane."
Like many, Clark had anticipated James might choose a more familiar destination such as Miami or Cleveland. "That's really shocking, but I'll be watching more 76ers games and obviously I'm a big fan of Bron so no matter where he was going to go I was gonna probably cheer for that team and root for them," she stated. Clark added that she plans to reserve tickets for the 76ers' upcoming games against the Pacers.
James has publicly supported Clark, particularly during her transition into the WNBA and in response to criticism from veteran players. In April 2024, he posted on X, "If you don’t rock with Caitlin Clark game you’re just a FLAT OUT HATER!!!!! Stay far away from them people!! PLEASE."
Clark, who has earned her third All-Star selection, is currently averaging 21 points and nearly eight assists per game for the Indiana Fever, who hold a 17-10 record. She is set to participate in the All-Star game on Saturday as part of Teresa Weatherspoon's team.
