Caitlin Clark Proactively Engaging With WNBA Referees to Avoid Technical Foul Suspension

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has been initiating conversations with WNBA referees before games to proactively address her technical foul count, which currently stands at seven. An eighth technical foul would result in an automatic suspension.

Clark stated that these pre-game discussions have fostered a more positive and collaborative atmosphere with the officials. "I feel like the refs might also know I have seven technical fouls, so I always try to warn them, like, ‘I’m working with you, I’m working with you, like, let’s have a conversation,’" Clark told reporters Thursday. "I think it’s made my conversations with them more positive and more conversational in both ways for them and for me."

The Indiana Fever are in a tight playoff race, with only a half-game separating them from the fourth-seeded Atlanta Dream. The league's playoff picture shows seven of the eight teams within five games of each other, with only three to four regular-season games remaining for most teams.

Clark noted that her technical foul count resets for the playoffs. "I mean, I really only have three more games to go, because [if] the fourth game starts [and] I get a technical, I’m not kicked out of the game, and then it resets for the playoffs," Clark said. "So, I’m really proud of myself, but still three games to go."

She received her eighth technical foul on August 8 against the Chicago Sky, but the league later rescinded it. Clark and Chicago Sky's Angel Reese are currently tied for the league lead in technical fouls.

The Fever are set to resume play on Friday after a hiatus for the FIBA Women’s World Cup, during which Clark helped Team USA secure a gold medal. Indiana will play the Seattle Storm on Friday, while the Dream face the Sky on Saturday.
