Caitlin Clark, a prominent figure in the WNBA, has been selected for the United States women's national basketball team that will compete in the upcoming FIBA World Cup in Berlin. This marks Clark's debut in the tournament, as she joins fellow WNBA rookies Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers on the 12-player roster.
The trio previously contributed to the USA's victory in a World Cup qualifying tournament in March. Their inclusion in the World Cup team aims to secure a fifth consecutive title for the United States in the competition, which runs from September 4 to 13.
The WNBA season will observe a nearly three-week break to accommodate the international tournament.
Clark's selection comes amid a period of significant attention surrounding her rookie WNBA season. Her on-court treatment by officials and opponents, along with her teammate Sophie Cunningham's controversial remarks about transgender athletes, have been subjects of public debate. Clark was also notably absent from the 2024 Olympic roster, a decision that sparked considerable discussion.
"This is an incredibly talented group," said USA Basketball national team managing director Sue Bird in a statement. "Wearing a USA jersey is a privilege, and I know these 12 players will embrace that responsibility as we go after another gold medal. I can't wait to see what this team accomplishes together."
Veteran players on the World Cup team include four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, and Kelsey Plum. Stewart will be participating in her fourth World Cup, a milestone matched by few others in USA Basketball history.
Rhyne Howard and Aliyah Boston will also make their World Cup debuts, with Kara Lawson serving as head coach.
The American team is set to face China, Italy, and the Czech Republic in pool play. Notably, Sabrina Ionescu and Alyssa Thomas were not selected for the roster.
