Sleep experts often recommend limiting caffeine intake for at least six hours before bedtime to avoid disruptions to sleep. Dr. Lindsay Browning, a psychologist and sleep expert, suggests that for individuals going to bed around 10 p.m., avoiding caffeine after 2 p.m. might be beneficial. She emphasizes that a strict, universal rule is not helpful because it doesn't account for the complexities of individual responses.
For pregnant women, the National Health Service (NHS) advises keeping daily caffeine intake below 200mg, approximately equivalent to two mugs of filter coffee. This recommendation stems from studies linking higher caffeine consumption during pregnancy to potential complications such as low birth weight.
For the general adult population, the key message is moderation. Caffeine sensitivity differs greatly from person to person. Peter Rogers, emeritus professor of nutrition at the University of Bristol, states that caffeine is relatively safe. He notes that consuming excessive amounts leads to unpleasant jittery feelings, naturally signaling a need to stop. Severe caffeine poisoning is rare and typically involves concentrated caffeine products where multiple grams can be ingested quickly.
Despite potential side effects of overconsumption, moderate regular coffee drinking is associated with positive health outcomes. Decades of research suggest that individuals who consume coffee in moderation may have a lower risk of several major diseases and potentially live slightly longer than those who do not drink coffee. While researchers cannot definitively attribute these benefits solely to coffee, the correlation remains consistent.
