José Caballero delivered a much-needed spark for the New York Yankees, making the most of a rare start by scoring a run and driving in another in the team's 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings on Monday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had opted to sit Jazz Chisholm Jr., who has been slumping, in favor of Caballero at second base.

Caballero's performance offered a significant boost to a Yankees offense that has struggled recently. "Certainly hoping for [a spark], and he was good," Boone commented. "Obviously good defense, but a big hit for us, a big walk, a [steal] to set up the first run, drove in the next run. … A lot of really good things by him and a big difference in the game today."

This was only Caballero's second start since George Lombard Jr. was called up on August 4. Despite the limited playing time, Caballero has shown an ability to be effective in spurts. His contributions on Monday included drawing a four-pitch walk in the third inning, advancing to second on a groundout, stealing third base for his 30th of the season, and scoring on Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

"I always try to help my team in any way possible and see any opportunity that is out there to take advantage of," Caballero said. "I was able to take third base on him and make it easier for my teammate behind me to drive me in."

Later in the game, with the score tied 1-1 in the seventh inning, Caballero hit a single to left field with two outs, scoring Lombard and putting the Yankees ahead 2-1. The play initially led to a rundown situation involving Caballero, which allowed Chisholm, who had entered as a pinch runner, to score. However, replay review indicated that Caballero was tagged during the rundown before Chisholm crossed the plate.

Chisholm, a pending free agent, has had a difficult season, batting .216 with a .683 OPS as of Sunday. He did manage a single in the ninth inning and stole a base after entering as a pinch runner in the seventh.

With the Yankees set to face three right-handed starters from the Orioles in their upcoming series, Boone indicated that Chisholm might return to his regular role at second base. However, Caballero's performance on Monday provided a compelling argument for his continued involvement in the lineup.
