BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier found himself at the center of an unexpected conversation during the broadcast of the Cougars' 28-17 victory over Arizona. College football analyst Robert Griffin III shared an anecdote, reportedly told to him by Bachmeier, suggesting that the quarterback's family sometimes engages in naked dinners.
The comment surfaced in the fourth quarter of the game on Fox Sports, as the broadcast focused on Bachmeier's mother, April, in the stands. Griffin stated, "He [Bear] told us that at the dinners, you know, sometimes they just, they just take the clothes off and they walk around naked." When play-by-play announcer Connor Onion responded with a question about whether he had to answer that, Griffin remarked, "You don’t have to answer that because I don’t think anybody listening right now really kind of does that." Onion added, "America, it’s up to your imagination."
Griffin did not offer further elaboration on the remark. The viral moment occurred nearly two weeks after the September 12th game. Neither Bear Bachmeier nor his brother, Tiger, who plays wide receiver for BYU, have publicly addressed Griffin's comments.
Bachmeier had a successful outing in the game against Arizona, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for a touchdown. The win marked BYU's second consecutive victory of the season. The Cougars previously defeated Utah Tech 63-7 in their season opener and Colorado State 41-23. BYU is scheduled to play the TCU Horned Frogs on October 3rd in Fort Worth.
