Bystanders Apprehend Suspected Tesla Thief After Pedestrian Strike in San Diego

A chaotic scene unfolded in San Diego when bystanders pursued and apprehended a man accused of driving a stolen Tesla through a crowded pedestrian walkway, striking a woman and causing serious injuries. The incident occurred on a boardwalk where witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling at high speed.
Video footage captured the moment Alex Srour, a bystander, intervened by chasing down and tackling the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzaba. Srour told local media that he heard screams and saw the Tesla barreling toward him at approximately 70 miles per hour.
Gonzaba has been charged by police with assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run, and auto theft, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Office. Srour reported that the Tesla sideswiped his bicycle as it careened through the walkway, launching him to the side. He noted the unexpected nature of a car moving at such speed through a pedestrian area.
The woman struck by the vehicle, identified as 25 years old, was transported to a hospital with severe injuries including a fractured spine, broken ribs, and a laceration requiring 20 stitches, prosecutors told KNSD-TV. The vehicle involved was confirmed by police to be stolen.
Gonzaba is being held without bail at the San Diego Central Jail. Prosecutors highlighted his extensive criminal history during arraignment proceedings. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. If convicted on all counts, Gonzaba could face up to 24 years in prison, as reported by KNSD.
