Bystander Who Stopped Oregon School Shooter Identified

A parent of two students at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has been identified as the bystander who fatally shot the suspected gunman on Thursday, according to the bystander's family.

Kaylub Giamanco, a lifelong Bend resident, was reportedly driving nearby when he heard a commotion and entered the school. His family stated that Giamanco, who holds a concealed carry permit, intervened as the teen gunman was entering the school. Three children and a teacher were killed in the attack, and another student and teacher were critically injured. Police have not officially released the bystander's identity, but his family confirmed it to ABC News.

Giamanco's family issued a statement saying he is "overwhelmed" and regrets not being able to save more lives. The statement also noted that Giamanco "is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support."

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek commended the individual for his "heroic" intervention, which she said prevented further loss of life. President Donald Trump also praised Giamanco, calling him "a great hero" and stating, "He took care of business, and thank God we had him. Otherwise it would have been much worse."

Giamanco's family described him as thoughtful and empathetic and requested privacy during this difficult time. The family stated that Giamanco and his daughters, who attend the school, will not be participating in interviews.
