Bystander Kills Oregon Elementary School Gunman After Deadly Rampage

A heroic bystander shot and killed a teenage gunman Thursday after the assailant carried out a deadly rampage at an Oregon elementary school, law enforcement sources said.

The bystander intervened just minutes after police received the first report of a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend.

The first call to dispatchers indicated that a shot had been fired into a car near the school, according to police spokesperson Sheila Miller. The teen gunman killed at least three children and one adult, believed to be a teacher. Two other children were hospitalized with injuries; their conditions are unknown.

Approximately 400 to 450 students attend Silver Rail Elementary School, which was evacuated following the incident. It remains unclear where the shooting occurred on campus and whether the bystander possessed a firearm legally, given that the Bend La Pines school district has a policy banning firearms on its property. State law, however, permits lawfully possessed firearms to be stored unloaded in vehicles on school grounds.

Local officials were expected to provide further details at a press conference later Thursday evening.
