BYD Recalls Over 32,000 Shark Utes in Australia Due to Faulty Spare Wheel Cable
A potential failure in the spare wheel support cable could lead to the wheel detaching, posing a risk to other road users.
BYD is initiating a recall of more than 32,000 Shark utility vehicles in Australia due to a fault with the spare wheel support cable. The company stated that incorrect installation, positioning of the spare wheel tray, or insufficient fastening torque could lead to abnormal wear of the cable.
This wear, compounded by movement and friction during operation, may cause the cable to fail, resulting in the spare wheel detaching from the vehicle. Such an incident could endanger other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death, according to BYD.
The recall affects Premium, Performance, and Dynamic Cab Chassis models manufactured between August 29, 2024, and June 15, 2026.
BYD has announced it will replace the spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design at no cost to owners. Until the necessary work is completed, BYD is advising owners to remove their spare wheel. Instructions for removal can be found on page 259 of the BYD Shark 6 Owner's Handbook.
