BYD Launches First Plug-in Hybrid Supermini in UK Market
The BYD Dolphin G DM-i aims to capture the B-segment market with its blend of electric and gasoline range, competitive pricing, and practical features.
BYD has introduced the Dolphin G DM-i, marking the debut of the United Kingdom's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supermini. This move capitalizes on a significant 35% surge in UK PHEV sales last year and arrives as petrol prices remain high.
The Dolphin G DM-i offers an appealing proposition for buyers seeking cost-effective running expenses. Prices for the new model start at £23,990, providing an electric-only range of 24.8 miles and a total combined range of 633 miles. A higher trim, the Boost specification, is available for £26,990, increasing the electric-only range to 65 miles.
BYD, a global leader in battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales, is leveraging its agile manufacturing capabilities, which allow for new car development in as little as 18 months. The company has identified a gap in the market for small PHEV models within the B-segment, which represents the second-largest segment in the UK with a 27.5% market share in 2024, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The Dolphin G DM-i adopts an approachable, unthreatening design with clean lines and a full-width rear light bar, drawing inspiration from BYD's ocean design language. While it may lack the distinctive styling of rivals like the Renault 5 or the premium feel of a Volkswagen Golf, its functional aesthetic is considered neat and accessible.
Inside, the Dolphin G DM-i offers a well-equipped cabin that aims to mimic a more premium feel. Even the base model includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel. The Boost trim enhances this with a larger 12.8-inch infotainment screen, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, ambient lighting, and wireless charging. Higher trims add features such as a head-up display, panoramic sunroof, and integrated Google services.
The interior provides comfort for up to five adults, though the rear seating is best suited for shorter journeys. The car offers 425 liters of boot space, with an additional 45 liters available under the floor. Folding the rear seats down expands the cargo capacity to 1,225 liters.
In terms of driving dynamics, the Dolphin G DM-i features competent steering and handles bends with minimal body lean, instilling confidence in the driver. The braking system is responsive without being overly sharp. While the Boost trim provides adequate power for daily driving and country roads, it does not offer a particularly spirited performance, with a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 8.3 seconds. Drivers may notice a firm ride quality over rough surfaces and a notable amount of road noise. The car also features an advanced driver-assistance system with customizable shortcuts, though some users might find the indicator sounds, described as 'jazzy,' to be intrusive.
BYD offers four trims for the Dolphin G DM-i: Active, Boost, Comfort, and Sport. The Active trim starts at £23,990. The Boost trim, priced at £26,990, adds several comfort and convenience features, including heated seats and wireless charging, and vehicle-to-load functionality. The Comfort and Sport trims, priced at £28,490 and £29,490 respectively, introduce larger wheels, upgraded seating materials, 360-degree cameras, and integrated Google services. The Sport trim features artificial suede upholstery with color highlights.
The Active model is equipped with a 7.42kWh battery, offering 24.8 miles of electric range and charging in under three hours via a 3.3kW charger. The Boost, Comfort, and Sport trims utilize a larger 18.3kWh Blade Battery, providing 65 miles of electric range and a total range of 646 miles. These trims support 6.6kW AC charging, taking 2.9 hours for a full charge, and can DC fast charge from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes using a 39kW charger.
BYD suggests the Boost trim offers the best balance of features and price. However, the Dolphin G DM-i's upfront cost is higher than some conventional non-plug-in rivals, such as the Renault Clio E-Tech, which starts at £20,995.
The practicality and efficiency of the Dolphin G DM-i are most beneficial for drivers who can consistently utilize its electric-only range for daily commutes. For such users, the vehicle presents an affordable and efficient option. However, potential buyers need to consider whether they will actively charge the vehicle to realize its full cost-saving potential; otherwise, the premium over standard fuel-efficient alternatives may not be justified.
