Bush Family Member Endorses Democrat, Citing Character Concerns

Neil Bush, a son of former President George H.W. Bush and brother to former President George W. Bush, has endorsed Democratic candidate James Talarico for Senate in Texas, breaking with his lifelong Republican affiliation. Bush announced his decision on Facebook, stating, “I have been a Republican for most of my life, and I still believe deeply in many traditional Republican principles. But character matters more than party affiliation.”

Bush expressed deep concern over Ken Paxton, the current Texas attorney general and former President Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidate for Senate. He cited Paxton's involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results as “an affront to our democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power.” Paxton has also faced numerous scandals and was impeached by the Republican-led Texas House of Representatives, though later acquitted by the state Senate.

"More broadly, I believe Donald Trump and those who have enabled him have done enormous damage to the Republican Party," Bush wrote. "I worry about a political culture in which loyalty to an individual takes precedence over loyalty to principle, and where those who hold power begin to believe they are no longer accountable."

He further stated that his vote for Talarico was not solely based on opposition to Paxton, but also on admiration for Talarico's character. Bush described Talarico as someone who "speaks with respect, seeks common ground, and seems genuinely interested in bringing people together rather than driving them apart." He also noted Talarico's faith as a source of "humility, compassion, and conviction rather than a political weapon." Bush praised Talarico for his "integrity, civility, humility, and a willingness to listen to those with whom he disagrees."

The Bush family has had a publicly strained relationship with Donald Trump since his 2016 presidential campaign. Trump famously bullied Jeb Bush, Neil's brother, out of the Republican primary and frequently criticized George W. Bush's presidency. While most family members have remained largely silent on Trump, George W. Bush has reportedly expressed his disapproval through his artwork, including a painting described as depicting Trump in an unflattering light.
