Burundi Agrees to Accept U.S. Deportees Under Specific Conditions

Burundi has agreed to accept migrants deported by the United States, with the condition that these individuals have no prior connection to the East African nation, no pending criminal charges, and no links to terrorism. The announcement was made by Nancy Ninette Mutoni, a spokesperson for Burundi's president, during an event attended by government officials in Ngozi.

Mutoni stated that preparations are underway to provide accommodations and facilitate the integration of these deportees into local communities. She noted the necessity of thorough planning for their housing, sustenance, and coexistence with the existing population.

The agreement comes as the Trump administration has intensified its efforts to expand third-country deportations, a policy aimed at sending individuals to countries where they are not citizens and may have no established ties. The U.S. has previously sent deportees to several African nations, including Eswatini and South Sudan.

These third-country deportation policies have faced legal challenges. A recent U.S. appeals court ruling raised questions about the program, though it did not halt such deportations entirely. The ruling mandates that individuals facing removal must be given a meaningful opportunity to voice concerns about potential persecution or torture. The administration has defended the policy as a necessary measure when a deportee's home country refuses to accept them.
